Hello, just a few facts:
Did you know that:
1. Lucius Septimius Severus was a Black African and the first Black emperor of the Roman Empire?
2. That the 25th Dynasty of anicient Eygpt was without dispute, Black Africans - Pharoahs Kashta, Piye, Shabako, Shabatko, Taharqa, Tantutamum - were all Black. There were probably many more, but what I have mentioned cannot be disputed.
My point is that Black Culture should not be treated as if it just began with the arrival of Africans in the west, following slavery. It is just as ancient as any other culture.
I don't think you will find a single book that answers everything. You will need to read lots of different material and the internet is a good starting point. In addition to answers you get here, I also recommend to try to obtain 'The Slave Trade', by Hugh Thomas. It is recognised as an authoratative account of the subject.
Also, in many good bookshops like waterstones, you will find a section devoted to 'Black writers' - why not go and have a browse?
Learning can be fun and very interesting if you try.
good luck

Another suggestion is Maya Angelou's six-volume autobiography:-
1. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings
2. Gather Together in My Name
3. Singin' and Swingin' and Gettin' Merry Like Christmas
4. The Heart of a Woman
5. All God's Children Need Travelling Shoes
6. A Song Flung up to Heaven

There are several books available at the library and it's difficult to select just one in particular. Your local branch should have a section dedicated to African American culture and authors as does mine.
