Dude, do you realize that you can't ask the same question four times?

In the US, at least, any male can be called dude, but would only be called "a dude" if one were saying "I met a dude the other day." It is usually used between friends of about the same age, and that age is about 25 years and under. I hear it used between females, too, but if you asked them, they'd define it as a guy.

It means, among older people, a sharp-dressed man or a person who visits a ranch to ride horses and "work" with cattle while on vacation.

Traditionally a dude (pronounced 'düd' (American), or 'dyüd' (British)) is a dandy; a man who dresses flashily. But in recent years, the term has taken on a colloquial meaning at variance with that: it now means a male friend, comrade, or associate. Formerly, the word was associated with Western movies. The new usage entered the mainstream from California surfer slang from at least 1968,referenced in the movie 'Easy Rider', and today is strongly associated with Generation X.
