ipods suck
the creative labs zen series are nice and very affordable
toshiba gigabeat has been getting good reviews
if I had to buy one myself I'd go with the cowon iaudio series
i own an iriver h1xx series, still the best player in terms of sound quality
If you're looking for a 1gb flashdrive take a look at samsung's line of flashplayers, they're pretty nice

I would look at the upcoming iPod Shuffle from Apple:

It will be selling in October for about $79 featuring 1GB of space (about 250 songs).
