When I press the power button the power supply light and fan come on for a slipt second, and so does the cpu fan...but thats it..after that nothing. I had the power supply check and they said it was good. So maybe the motherboard? How can I know for sure before I go buying new parts...and without spending a ton on diagnotics at the computer store? Thanks for your help!

Ok..let me add some details! After the power supply light blinks for a second (and the fans come on and shut off)..nothing else happens...the monitor does not come on...the drives do not boot...nothing. I did take it all apart..disconnected everything from the motherboard..etc. I put it all back together and its still doing the exact same thing. Specs: mother board - Gigabyte GA-7VA (chipset KT 400), CPU - AMD Athlon 1800, running Windows XP. I hope that is detailed enough.

P.S. I am currently using my laptop...I really dont understand why ppl always ask how you are asking this if your computer wont start..since about 80% of the population now has laptops..or some other secondary form of computing device. Geez!

More details....I get check for capacitors and didnt see anything unusual..no bulging..or fried..that i could tell. It was very dusty though..i dusted everything with the pressurized air before putting it back together. Thank for all the replies...keep em coming!

Reply to Roy: The system was running fine...no changes were made to any hardware or software for at least a few months prior to this happening, so it is unlikely that a jumper or wrongly connected wire is causing the problem. It was working perfectly..I went to bed that night..about 5 hours later I came back and it would not turn on.

Does it beep any? Do you get anything on the screen like memory test? Could be CPU or Motherboard if you get nothing at all. If it was hard drive you would get disk failure. You would see bios load. I think your in the right that it's the motherboard.

One of the wires on the board is on the wrong connector this is shortig causing the termal fuse on the power pack to trip and shut the computer down or check the jumpers on the hard drive you may have put hard drives back in in wrong sequence should be master and slave if two hard drives on same or no jumper slave cable or hd master cd/dvd slave if on same cable if cd/dvd on second cable cd/dvd master hd slave or no jumper slave

Chances are your motherboard or CPU is fried. Depending on how old your computer is, it might be cheaper to by a new one and slave your current HDD in it so you dont loose any info.

I had the same problem recently and it was the motherboard. I wanted a new system anyway so it was cool.
It cost me 50 to find out.

I had the exact same problem once and it was the power supply I think I'd double check that.

This is what i have personally tried and it worked, but i can't assure you that yours will work that way, but still try it, and that is blowing the fan with your mouth. I have done it trice to my system and it worked sincerely.
