I just watched Serenity with Directors Commentary and thought to myself how Inara got short thrift. If Joss Whedon made a sequel (I know, unlikely) I think he should focus on the secret Inara was running from in the tv series coming back to haunt her.
I think it would be an incredible arc for Mal. The first film saw him go back to caring for something and someone after cutting himself off from his world. The second movie would move him closer to the hero he could be, becoming a soldier and true leader like during the war to save and protect Inara from the danger of her past, and willing to give up everything for his newly-realised love of her.
The sequel could also act as a turning point for him. He could become more willing to fight the Alliance for the beliefs that caused him to join the independents, which he consequently lost at Serenity Valley.
Not got it all thought through yet but what do the Firefly fans think of this?

P.S. I do have time on my hands to think this kind of thing up. I know I should get out more.

"Serenity" was all about Mal's story, and River's story, and Mal finding some level of redemption via River. From what I have read, that was intended to be Joss's primary arc for the series over the first 2 years.

And, by his own words, we learned all we were going to need to know about Book.

I truly think Inara was next - however it was going to play out. She ends up back on the ship, even makeup-free in the last scene. Right from the series pilot, Joss told us that Inara had secrets - and they were only hinted at during the partial season. Her story was going to be told, and there was going to be a play-out (but probably - and most effectively - no resolution) of the relationship between Mal and Inara; which probably would have had a few flashback sequences with Zoe and Wash, (bringing him back into the next movie).

But I am no fan of fan-fiction, and would leave the details - if there ever will be details - to Joss. The Firefly-verse is his creation, and I trust he would pull it off better in telling the story than anyone else can.

Although there will be no sequels, he indicated at the end of last year, I believe, there will probably be a new comic book series.

Have you read the Firefly fans second series? It deals with Inara in one of the episodes under the assumption that her mother is one of the High priestesses.
I think that the characters of Firefly/ Serenity are so well rounded that you could make a spin off or a second movie to any of them.
I'd love to see Jayne's ma, or why Zoe is the way she is.
I'd want someone to resurrect Wash or find out the darkness inside Book.
But then again, I adore River so what she got up to in the academy would be fun-- kind of a Dark Angel thing going on.

I love your idea though and I can see Mal starting up another independents war with all the backing that he could rustle up after Miranda.

That's a pretty good idea actually. Well done. You know what I find odd is that all of the sci-fi shows have all those novels written about them...and yet there are none for Serenity/Firefly...which is just ripe for new stories, just like yours. And since you have some time on your hands, why don't you write one? You could share/sell it at conventions perhaps. It's a story I would like to read that's for sure.

I'm not gonna comment on the meat of your question, 'cos I can't read. But...

I sat through a few episodes of Firefly at some dodgy-haircut mate's house a couple of years ago and was thoroughly impressed. I aren't much into TV - don't really have the time - but the protagonists in the show were some of the freshest, most colourful and three-dimensional characters I've seen on TV for a long time. Tis a shame it got axed, I figure.

Any avenue to keep that going as a series has got to be a good thing.
There is a web page devoted to Serenity/Firefly with a load of fan written short stories. Could be worth checking it out and even offering your effort.
I just did a google search to find it but couldn't, but if you're really interested just e-mail me and I'll see if I can track it down.
