I've seen it in some second world war books. It's quite small and is to the North West of Mongolia.

It might have been that place that the Russian Baron set up, but it was certainly not Russia or Kazakhstan, seeing as Kazakhstan didn't exist and was part of the USSR. The place was about the size of Ireland. Go to wikipedia type in Axis powers and in the icture you will see the country that I mean.

I found out from Wikipedia 20 minutes ago that it was a country called Tuva, or Tannu Tuva. And Russia did absorb it.

You are quite correct in your assumptions. There is indeed a country there and it's one that no longer exists.

Link 2: Map of the World in 1939
Link 3: Map of China between 1939 and 1945

As you can see, the country listed in that second map no longer exists, therefore it is fair to assume that the country was taken over by China during the second World War, but as to the country's name that's a different kettle of fish

It could have been part of Outer Mongolia called Tannu Uriankhahi which is now known as the Tuva republic. I used to collect stamps and was always finding stamps from Tannu Tuva and never knew where it was.

because of the change in time, eastern mongolia is west of mongolia proper, unless it it daylight saving time, and then mongolia is west of eastern mangolia. western mongolia is always west of eastern mongolia unless mongolia is not on daylight saving time. but once you cross the international date line, all that is reversed until the fall equinox, when western mongolia is actually west of mongolia proper, at which it all falls into the right place, such as in this order 1. eastern mongolia,2. mongolia 3. western mongolia. get the picture?
