because most young people are stupid. Pipe smoking is not something that you can do quickly and it takes practice and knowledge to do so. People in general don't know how to slow down and take life easily.

it looks pretentious like a beret wearing existenstalistic college professor in a tweed jacket with leather elbow patches whose never had a real job in his life and likes to say things like "indeed"; "my word!": "elementary my dear fellow". Also the damn things go out quite often.
Still if ever I become a history professor I will perchance take up the pipe to add credence to the afore said image with a dash of misplaced sophistication

Good question!!! But i think the pipe is a thing that will wear out soon. Its really just for strong smokes

I don't smoke, but when I think of pipe smokers I think of old people.

It's just too complicated and out of fashion. You have to stuff the pipe properly, light it properly, all things to be learned and to have some patience.
Nowadays it's uncool and not very handy.
