Our garden's terrain is quite bumpy, and we'd like to have it completely evened out - what's the easiest way to do this? And is it possible for us to do it ourselves, rather than hiring professional help? What's the best time of year to complete the work? Many thanks in advance for your answer '_'

Kill off the grass with a good weedkiller, Roundup being the best. Once the grass/weeds and neighbours cats are all dead hire a rotivater and give the ground a good turnover, hit it a couple of times as this will help put oxygen back into the soil and break it up really well. get a decent rake preferably a wide landscaping rake a spread the soil out, breaking any lumps up. You may have to get some fresh topsoil and spread this over the area as it is full of fresh nutrients that the new plants a grass will need to take. When the soil is level and you've added top soil as required walk it in, i,e take small stamps across it to pack it down a bit, you will look like a nutter but it has to be done! When its nice and packed go over it lightly with a rake to loosen the surface, this allows the seed to take more easily.I don't know where you are but in Britain you can do this and sow seed into late autumn as long as there is no frost because it will kill the seed, Generally as long as its wet and mild seed will crack nicely and produce a fine lawn. When you do, don't cut the grass as soon as you see green. Let no one walk the area for several weeks and allow the grass to reach full cover before touching. If you notice any patches the throw more seed on as needed. Or pay me to do it, I'm the ground care foreman and landscaper for a large estate in Scotland.

I am not sure just what you mean by uneven, but here ius my suggestion. Find someone who has a TROYBILT Rototiller and have them till your entire garden , mentioning to them that you would like it leveled as much as possible. The Troybilt (I used to own one and loved it) is a tines at the rear rototiller which will till down several inches and will even out all parts of the garden simply because it brings up the dirt, pulverizes it and then drops it as it continues on its way. DO NOT expect that the person with the tiller will do it in one pass over the garden. It will take several passes, but it WILL do the job.

If you want to save money and you like working outside (and you will get a work-out), I say do it yourself. If it was me, I would start with the yellow pages. Look up a local rental company and ask how much a rota-tiller costs to rent for a half-day. They'll show you how to use it. This machine can even out the bumps and make nice rows for planting in your garden. Fall is a great time to work outside in the garden. Also, do a 'Yahoo Search' for "Gardens" or "Garden photo's". Type in what kind of garden you are wanting to plant: "Rose Garden" "Vegetable Garden" "Flower Garden" and research it like that. It will give you some good ideas... Good Luck and Happy Gardening!

Strip the entire good grass turf by hireing a machine that does the stripping, Pile the turfs on the drive in the meantime. correct the irregularities in the garden by digging/ rolling the soil replace the turf and roll the grass sods with a roller over and over again. Water the grass with a hose and keep rolling until you have a nice even surface.
Repeat the watering rolling until you are satisfied with the job.

How To Level Garden

Applying pure logic to this question, & not knowing the size of your garden, would it be feasable to take the top off the bumps & use that soil to fill in some of the hollows & if there are any hollows left get some top soil to fill them in with & use a grden roller to compact it. Probably the best time would be in the spring then you could re-seed the grass & it would look good fairly quickly.

You can do it yourself
get 4 pointed sticks and a large ball of twine
put the 4 posts at each corner of garden and tie string to each one so you can see the biggest bumps and dips,
dig the bumps up and fill in the dips

Sorry but the only way is to dig it up, turn over the soil and distribute it evenly.
It should be done before the spring time, so that any grass, plants etc are ready to grow.
