Is it possible to have hanging baskets all year through (South Yorkshire, UK)? Would I have to do something special with the basket - e.g. extra lining to protect the roots? How about watering? Any ideas?

A lot of the garden centres have ones with winter pansies, cyclamen, a small conifer and heather in them. You can grow anything in a pot as long as the pot is big enough so grow whatever you like. Just remember to watch the water levels, feed it once every so often and make sure you have drainage holes in the pot you use though if you using hanging baskets that shouldn't be a problem. Experiment a little and find what works best for you.

winter pansies or violas, bellis daisies, ivy to trail, lamium heathers. Underplant these with some dwarf daffodil bulbs. Make sure you put plent of plants in as the plants wont grow much over the winter. You must make sure the drainage is ok as they may get waterlogged IF we have a wet winter. Make sure you dead head your pansies to keep the flowers coming.

Winter pansies are good for colour, variegated ivy is effective for the 'hanging' part, and a few snowdrops and crocuses will extend the life of the baskets.

I use artificial ones. No watering, always fresh all year round, just need the yearly rinse in soapy water. Modern artificial plants are indistinguishable from real and last for years!

greetings from Scotland.
winter pansies might be OK , or variegated leaved rockery plants, that's what i am going to try.....was thinking about herbs as well. my thinkin is if it survives in a dryish rockery it will survive in a basket.

heathers are great , i work in a nursery and we use them all year round
erica carnea
erica darlyensis
erica erigena
erica vagan are all great and are limr tolerant
skimmia, ivy's, grasses, galterea and winter bedding are all great too
You can also get dyed heathers (blue, lime green, orange, red)
but these will need peat as they are calluna's
