If you like LA Confidential, make sure to check out the original film noirs such as Bogart's "The Maltese Falcon".
A great crime film this year was "Hidden (Cache)" by Michael Haneke. Very Hitchcockian (obviously check out Hitchcock's classics as well). Memento is great if you haven't seen it yet.
Heat is my favorite "cop" movie. Dark, stylish and amazing character studies with great actors.
A few of my general all-time faves: Fight Club, Thin Red Line, A Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver

Dantes peak, lord of the rings, the bone collector, seven, and many more i cant think of, but if you look for films with Morgan Freeman in or Denzil Washington you can't go wrong iv'e seen most films that star either one or the other and iv'e never seen one that i haven't liked.

I'd recommend some world cinema - especially films from South Korea.
If you can bare subtitles, definitely check out A Bittersweet Life - I reckon you'd quite enjoy it.

Kill Bill 1 and 2. I never fancied them, maybe just because i'm female, but my other half kept saying i would really enjoy them, as he knows my tastes so well, i watched them both in one go. Excellent films.
