What would you do if you knew who the love of your life was, but she was a different caste and even being in a relationship would mean you would be disowned by your family and community?

My immediate response is that I wouldn't care and would continue the relationship if I loved her and sod the conseqences but then again I'm not Indian where I know these caste issues are important, especially with the older generation but I think unless some people take a stand, things will stay the way they are. I think it's ridiculous that a family would disown someone simply based on their caste. I've even heard of gay Indians or Pakistanis being murdered by their own families simply because of their sexual leanings. Totally ridiculous.

Not soppy - star crossed! That's what all the great movies are about. Romeo & Juliet, Westside Story etc etc
You'd work it out, run away and get married, write a book out of it (really good if you get physically threatened), be invited to guest on tv shows etc etc.

Nothing soppy about it -I've been in similar situation; my mother told me that she would never have anything to do with me if I went out with a girl not of her faith.
I loved my mum, but that hardened my resolve to disassociate myself from the crazy, intolerant world of religion.
Mum sill loves me, and although the relationship didn't work out as lovers, the girls remains one of my closest and dearest friends.

are you close to your family? If you are then surely you could talk them round by telling them exactly what this person means to you - a family should stand by you no matter what you do - even if they dont agree with you.
It wouldnt worry me personally what a community thought of it - whys it any of their business?
Just be sure that this is worth doing though - dont act on a whim.

we cant choose who we fall in love with, its your choice, if someone makes you happy go for it, if other people say they will disown you then they do not care about your happiness.
they should want you to be happy. life is very short and we are a long time dead.

Take every opportunity you can in life, be happy. cherish something if it is special

I'd think the Bollywood industry might consider making a film about it, or maybe a writer could produce a novel about such a situation.

Now, that's sardonic.

If she truely is the love of your life, then go for it, and let nothing stand in your way. You only get one love of your life and you would be a fool to let it slip past you. As for your family, they may surprise you.

Doesn't that shoot to hell the concept of caste? A person can rise above the destiny determined by social discrimination.

They say LOVE conquers all...I'm assuming its religion again, being the issue here and colour. Why dint people just get on with their lives. If you truly love her, then Ur family, community etc..would have to get on with their own issues,it's 21 century fpr gods sake..Move away from then and get on with your own life, with your loved one..
