I think his books are really about the nature of humans, both the good and the bad. B/c of that, they deal with love, hate, evil, greed, triumph, and tragedy (the dog almost always dies!).
I think many of his books also deal with the ability of human nature to overcome obstacles...the triumph of something essentially human over something essentially evil. Of course, in some of his novels (particularly the Bachman books) human nature, at least the good aspects of it, don't triumph in the way we might wish.

he wrote the derry books about people living under the radar of "normal" society - kids, and old people - the third one was supposed to feature homeless people, but i didnt read that one
needful things - the ultimate undoing of society will be the secret /inner jealousies, insecurities etc . . . of its citizens themselves sometimes what is most frightening is what lives in the hearts of men, and even yourself thats a general one
