In ancient times virgin represented the independent, self-sufficient quality in women. They were not susceptible to falling in love. Emotional attachments did not divert then from what they considered important. They were not victimized and did not suffer.

A virgin is a female who has not experienced sexual intercourse, i.e. been penetrated by a penis. Masturbation using a dildo and fingering don't count.
