I always turn my computer of from the 'start' menu and from something that happened a couple of nights ago I am glad that I do.
We had a thunderstorm and there was a power surge on the telephone line which blew out my modem, which we replaced. Friends just down the road had left their computer on - and the same bolt of lightning blew the whole lot! They are having to wait for a claim on their house insurance.
I still couldn't be bothered to disconnect the modem each time - but it's worth considering.

Depends how long you are going to leave it for. If you mean for 10 mins while you get a drink or something then a screensaver is fine. If a bit longer, say couple of hours for lunch, you should use the power management settings to reduce the power to the monitor, hard disks etc. If over-night, then turn the lot off by the power switch and sleep easy.

To save energy turn the monitor off. A screensaver is a pointless device and unnecessary for LCD monitors. Power management is a better way.

I turn my monitor off. I have come back several times where the screensaver had been minimized to the taskbar by a popup so it never kicked back in because technically it was still running.

screensavers used to be necessary for old machines, because if the pixel didn't change for a long period of time it could become dead, resulting in a mark on your screen, but now computers are more advanced there is no real need for screen savers. you'll save more energy by turning off the screen too

just leave the screensaver on it wont make any difference, its the modem thats uses most of the power ans takes the wear and tear, but this is unlikely to happen
