To Disconnect:
Right click on the connection icon on the system tray and select disconnect. There could be more than one connection icons on the system tray. BSNL reccomends to put the modem in bridge mode and create an ADSL connectiod in your PC. If you are running Windows XP, you will have the connection icon on the desktop or in the Desktop->My Network Places->View Network Connections->Broadband Connections. Double click on that and select disconnect.

I would take the connection cord out of the modem port that will prevent your conputer from useing that particular connection. If canceling the service call your provider's customer service desk and go through the billing cancelation process over the phone that would also disconnect your broadband internet connection.

neither double clicking nor switching off the adsl modem can always ensure that the connection is off. the only sure way is to disable your connection. enabling can be done as easily either from control panel or from quick launch.
