Just tell him that as a "friend," you wanted to save him from some social embarrassment by telling him first that he has a very obvious body odor and he might want to rethink his deodorant or shower products. I bet he tells you he knows and he might say he doesn't know what to do. So be prepared to suggest a few products or even suggest he go to a doctor, because it might not be his fault--he might have a body chemistry problem. So there's my intelligent answer. Now, if he gets defensive or sarcastic, just spray him with Black Flag! Okay, I'm kidding.

This guy who smells may have the genetic condition called Trimethylaminuria, or "TMAU" for short. There is a lot of information online about this disease - just enter "TMAU" or "trimethylaminuria" into an Internet search engine. TMAU can cause horrible body odors (and horrible bad breath) in persons who have this disease. The only symptom of TMAU is the odor, and people with TMAU are otherwise healthy. The body odor is not caused by a lack of personal hygiene. In fact, a person with TMAU can smell horribly 10 minutes after they shower. The odor can resemble that of rotting fish, urine, feces, or garbage. People affected by TMAU can also have a musty smell.
The strength of the odor caused by TMAU varies from person to person, and may also vary over time. For women, the odor typically gets worse around their periods. Stress can cause an increase in the odor. The odor is not affected by personal hygiene. The TMAU odor is caused because the person's liver does not produce an enzyme that is necessary to break down a nutrient found to some degree in almost all foods (the nutrient choline). The liver of a person with TMAU can only break down choline into a very smelly state; people without TMAU can break down choline all the way, so it doesn't smell anymore.
There is currently no cure for TMAU.
Good luck dealing with this difficult situation and please remember that this guy's odor may not be his fault.

Man that's a hard one lol. If he smells than that might be a big problem because maybe that's how he smell and there's no change. Try saying, "excuse me but do you think I can try this new body-spray on you because I can't seem to smile it if I spray it on my ll. Good luck! Best I can think of okay!

I had this problem with a co-worker. I just kept asking what is that smell? Do you smell something that stinks? Until the person got the hint.

Nicely ask him if he's ever tried a certain cologne and tell him you'd bring him some if he'd like it. If that doesn't work, move your seat and let someone else do it, cause it's bound to happen..

just pull him to the side and tell him that you over heard other people talking about him smelling bad and you just figured you would tell him so no one would hurt his feelings. i did it to a coworker and it worked.
