When did cartoons become so wise/profound?

Obviously fellow Answerers don't watch the Cartoon Network!
There is nothing profound about The Cramp Twins or Rim(?) and Stinky . Or what about Hi, Hi Puffi Ami Yumi?

Some cartoons have always been way up there in the profound catagory , but The Powerpuff Girls and so on? I don't think so...

pretty much since we started having cartoons. Early ones in England were used to ridicule the ruling class. Early ones in the U.S. made fun of pompous politicians. An advantage to putting your message in a cartoon is that it may reach more people than an written article.
