A liter is not equal to a (US liquid) quart (i.e., a "quart"er of a gallon), but it's close. There is a little more in a liter than a quart.
If you want a "standard" to metric conversion, there are many free convertors on the Web.

A 1/4 of a gallon is a quart, or two pints.
in the UK that's 40fl oz and in the USA 32fl oz
A litre - according to my measuring jug - is approximitely 17 and a 1/2 fluid ounces, that is slightly more than a US pint and slightly less than a UK pint.
Stick to good ole pints, quarts and gallons though!
And ignore that jerk who was first to answer your question.
