Hi all! I just want to know if anyone knows why my hermit crab died today :( He lost 2 limbs in the past 3 days, but my other one is completly unaffected by whatever that one had. Is there anything that might have caused it that I'm not thinking of? I tried feeding them more calcium rich food and crushed whole grain cereal, as I heard that might be a possible problem. Anything else? Thank you so much!! I will miss him very much as he was the most lively and fun to play with out of the two....

Land Hermit crabs live a very very long time if you know how to take care of them. A couple people here obviously had no clue. Our hermit crabs pair are 16 and 3 months old and the others rang in age of 10-5 years.. and that is not their actual age just how long they have lived with us. We currently have 54 land hermit crabs.

Dropped limbs are a sign of extreme stress and improper tank conditions.
Either too hot or too dry or both\
being handled too much
bathing
wrong substrate
EQ in commercial foods
no salt water source
not the right extra shells available

So there are some things to think about and to see if the above applies.

Temp must be between 76-82 degrees F
Humidity must be between 75%-85% relative
both temp and humidity must be constant and monitored 24/7 with gages.

Pam d is wrong, hermit crabs can live a very long time. I love them and I own 8. Ok I suggest you google hermit cabs as there are many sights that have great info for caring for crabs, they are more complex than people think! Stress is the most likely reason but you need to check that you are using sea salted water, dechlorinated freash water, check humidity levels and the substrate you are using...

Contrary to popular answers, hermit crabs can actually live up to 15 years in captivity, however it is incredibly difficult to say how old they actually are at the time of purchase. I would suggest getting the one you have left a new friend, because they tend to get depressed and lonely if kept by themselves and won't do anything at all. The included website has a lot of health answers (check the FAQ), as well as excellent general care advice and points of interest.

I had many and sometimes they get to dry even if you have water in there sometimes misting them with water and keeping there cage warm and moist helps, or on the internet I read to put them in a cup of water for like 30 seconds totally covered in water so help them keep moist but I only kept them in for 10-15 seconds 1 time a wk and they were fine although if you do not have an extra shell for them that they like they will die before they go into a shell they dont like so make sure you have tons of shells for them so they will find one they like also google hermit crabs.
and they do to live a long time they can get big, bigger then a golf ball.
