You are better off if you follow the safe driving instructions in the driver's manual for the state in which you live. Some people say it is best to allow a 3-second rule when following another vehicle in traffic. If you don't have 3 seconds to make a driving decision without being in an accident, you are following too closely. Every person that tailgates you is following too closely. The tailgater wants you to speed up so they don't have to get into the fast lane, because some officers will pull the car in the fast lane over for passing above the speed limit. The tailgater has probably gotten speeding tickets for passing above the speed limit in the past and don't want another one, so the tailgater tries to make you speed.

Idiots and morons are everywhere. Tailgating is dangerous. I slow down to compensate for the distance they don't leave for safe stopping. Many people are also poor judges of distance and will follow close by thinking it's OK. They also close in the distance to prevent other cars from weaving through traffic. Even though they are trapped in traffic their subconscious pushes them to tailgate. This is a selfish materialistic world.

I hate those drivers that tailgate for no reason, they can lick a d*ck. I only get up on someone's azz if they're in the fast lane going slow.

People are pushy and stupid. The right lane naturally is the slow moving lane so you just keep doing the speed limit and don't worry about them.

Many people let their rudeness magnify when they drive. There are way too many rude, nasty drivers on our streets and highways. They act like maniacs and are dangerous. That is why our highway death toll is so high. Continue to ignore them and make it your business to never even glance at them when they try to get your attention. They feel very stupid when their antics get them zero. Concentrate on your driving and try and stay safe.

because they are in a hurry and your very existence is therefore a grievous inconvenience. so try not to let it bother you too much, it's nothing personal I'm sure. just be happy you're not suffering from the same level of anxiety and desperation.
