...in the most "acoustically sound place on the ship"? It is classical, but I can't quite place it. Beethoven is my guess. Does anyone know the exact name of the piece?

Much of the music you hear on Star Trek is composed for Star Trek. They have had many talented musicians work on the show over the years. Many of the TNG episodes had music composed by Jerry Goldsmith, Dennis McCarthy, or Jay Chattaway. In the case of "Lessons" it was Jay.

Someone asked about this episode not too long ago and wanted to purchase the music. I couldn't tell if he wanted the sheet music or the actual sound track. The were several "Music of Star Trek" books, I do not know if any included the music from the Ressikan flute scenes. The flute had music in two episodes actually, and they were...

"The Inner Light" - the one where Picard first learned the song and one of the best episodes of the Next Generation, in my opinion.

and.. "Lessons", which, of course is the episode in your question.

The brass Ressikan flute is one of the items up for bid in the Christie's official studio auction of Star Trek memorabilia taking place in Fall 2006. The flute, which cannot actually be played, was originally estimated to sell for $300, which auction directors admit doesn't "factor in that emotional fury generated around this kind of material." However, the estimate has since been raised to $800-$1000 on Christie's website.

This last link, which you may find interesting, has information about all of the Star Trek composers and has audio clips from much of star trek, including the music you are referring to!

BTW - In the act of conducting all that "research", I was able to find the track for the music of this scene. Here's the link...

<>I think it may have been written just for the show. Originally played on "The Inner Light" episode. Supposedly, you can hear it here:

Here's some more info
"Jay Chattaway composed the music for this episode, including the Ressikan flute solo played by Kamin and Picard. Chattaway later expanded this piece into a six-minute orchestral suite that is available on "The Best of Star Trek: 30th Anniversary Special" audio CD. The Ressikan melody has similarities to the Scottish tune 'Skye Boat Song', also known as 'Speed Bonny Boat'."

These days you can learn how to sing over the internet. Check out Aaron Anastasi's singing video lessons here: http://www.voicevideolessons.com The videos are very easy to follow and to my surprise extremely helpful even for advanced singers. For beginners I would have to say this is a gold mine. I was able to improve my singing, voice tone and range in just under two weeks and I am an advanced musician, been doing this for the last 13 years.

I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a singing teacher but that would have cost me over $1400 per month. Good thing with this internet, $1400 it's a lot of money for me.

Great question. I remember that and I just loved it. I figured it was an original that was written for the episode. I hope someone knows more. They played an improvised version of Frere Jacques earlier on in the episode.
