It is about pie--just not the kind you can eat, more like the slice of your life.

Bye Bye Miss American Pie is a realization that "The times-they are a changin". With the death of Buddy Holly, JFK and then Bobby and Martin in 1968, childhood innocence is lost.

In the mid-sixties, one thought a wild time would making out in your Chevy with a cheerleader at the levi while your buddies were drinking whiskey and rye. By the time you got to the age where you could do that, the world had changed.

The Beatles, Dylan, Stones, Joplin all are referenced. Took the last train to the coast--jumping into adulthood at a tumultuous time in our history.

This song was meant to be an epic of history and the Americn Pie plane name is a tedious and untrue urban myth.

American Pie is just a nonsense phrase that happens to rhyme with Bye. A newspaper article at the time of the Madonna cover claimed that Don McLean has always refused to explain what the song was about. But the words are meaningful and interpretations have been made.

For example, 'The day the music died' was in fact about the death of Buddy Holly.
