I'm a pretty good dancer - good rhythm, good footwork, I lead really well and I'm always in sync with my partner. But I've always had a problem of stiff hips. It's not that I'm a shy dancer or anything, I just can't make my hips move like other dancers I see. Any suggestions to loosen 'em up?

I dance mostly Latin - salsa, rumba, samba. So you can see how important those hips are.

Most often, it's not the issue of flexibility, but rather, a successful way of attempting it.

Try this: stand with your feet together. (That's your neutral position) Put weight on one leg, let the other leg's knee go as far forward as it will go without moving your foot and keeping both ankles on the ground. This will prompt you to settle into the hip of the standing leg. That means the hip of the standing leg will go as far back as it will go. This should produce a lot of opposition in your hips, meaning one hip is pushed far back, the other is pretty much forward. This is the essence of your hip movement, at least the amplitude of it. Bring yourself back to neutral position. Repeat the same on the other leg. Note that your hipbone is not supposed to come out sideways at all in this exercise. Rather push it back, not to the side. If, standing in the neutral position, you imagine walls on both sides of you, you should still remain within the walls when you do this exercise.

Two suggestions that may help you (from one of my ladyfriends who's a professional dance instructor for many years, as her mother before her), do stretching exercises every single day in the morning and evening before going to bed, and when alone at home, dance and EXAGGERATE the hip motions as you dance. Little by little, you'll see the change in your "stiff" hip movements as you loosen up. It works! Speak with a professional dancer and ask him/her to suggest exercises to loosen the hips.
