Over the years, we have had both. We absolutely love our current refrigerator with the freezer on the bottom. You use your refrigerator far more often than you use your freezer so it makes sense to have it on top. We found that the narrow refrigerator in a side by side was a pain for large platters or big pots. The Thanksgiving turkey and pots of soup can easily take up a whole shelf.
Good luck with your choice.

I prefer the bottom freezer models. They are more energy efficient. Plus, I get into my refrigerator several times a day, but I only use the freezer about once a day. This puts the food I use most frequently at eye level. I also find that it's easier to see all the way to the back, so I don't forget about items as much as I used to!

we have a side by side with ice and water dispenser. we do not like this type of refrigerator. the width in each side is too narrow.
we have been looking at the french door model with the freezer in the bottom, along with ice and water dispenser. this type has MUCH more room in them. more expensive. and, requires more space to put it in. not only width wise and height wise, but depth wise (front to back). the sales person will point this out to you.
so now we are in think mode on it. as we don't think we have enough room in all three measurement areas. and we don't want to pay out to have the cupboards altered.
but the french door models certainly has our vote!!! go for it if you can!

I have a side by side and there is really a lack of space on both sides and it is one of the largest. I'd go with the bottom freezer and and the water on the door.
