The House of Stairs that I know and have read was written by William Sleator. It is a science fiction/dystopian futurist novel for young readers. Though it may be based indirectly on the M. C. Escher print, it is a completely independent work. Five youngsters find themselves abandoned in a weird house of stairs. Soon they discover that they are the "guinea pigs" in an elaborate experiment on human conditioning, which controls their responses through a robotic machine.

However, I discover that there is a mystery written by Ruth Rendall under the pseudonym of Barbara Vine that is also entitled the House of Stairs. And there may be others.
