The answer to your question is that metabolism consists of anabolism (building of complex substances from simpler) and catabolism (the break down of complex compounds). Digestion is the initial stage of catabolism.
Food consists of different types of organic compounds. Some of them are simple, or monomers (glucose), and other are more complex, or polymers (starch). In the process of digestion polymers are broken down to monomers. This takes place in the alimentary tract. After that monomers are transported in the cells and further broken down to water, carbon dioxide, ammonia and other substances. The whole process is called catabolism and digestion is the first step in it of reducing the polymers to monomers.

Digestion is the process by which FOOD containing large-sized particles of complex organic substances are broken down into small-sized easily absorb-able molecules. Thus Carbohydrates are digested into simple sugars like glucose, sucrose, lactose, etc.; Proteins into polypeptides and peptides; and Fats/Oils into fatty acids and glycerol.
On the other hand, Metabolism is a broader term including all the physical and chemical processes in the body that utilize or release ENERGY, such as: Breathing; Circulating blood; Controlling body temperature; Contracting muscles; Digesting food and nutrients; Eliminating waste through urine and feces; and Functioning of the brain and nerves.

I believe that digestion is the act of nutrition being pulled out of the foodstuff and metabolism is the act of using the nutrition or energy that has been extracted from food.

metabolism is what your body does with things on the molecular level; digestion is associated more with the bigger picture, like chewing, swallowing, food being processed in your stomach, then in your intestine, etc., etc.
metabolism is a part of digestion though, because once food gets broken down small enough, it's just a bunch of molecules.
