Some women open their mouths while putting on mascara. They do this for a completely logical reason, even though they don't know it. When mouth are opened the skin stretches that is why if the doctor has to work on your eyelids, you will be asked to open your mouth as wide as you can. Your face muscles are interconnected and used together. You know how when you close one eye, the other one closes? Of course, if you concentrate you can close one eye at a time, but if it's an instant reaction, like if something is flying at your face, you'll close both eyes, not just the one that would be in danger.

When you open your eyes really wide and look up, (as a woman putting on mascara does) your mouth muscles open as well. Notice how when people are looking up at something they often open their mouths. If you concentrate, you can apply mascara with your mouth closed, but you have to be consciously thinking about it.
