Contrails and they are caused by the heating of the air going through the turbine and being heated which causes the water vapor to turn to steam.

its called a contrail--a trail left by the plane through the clouds wen it is travelling at a high altitude and at a high speed

Its actually a vapor trail when the plane hits the afterburner it leaves the vapor burned off the fuel streaming in the air. they can't stay in afterburner long though you think a four-barrel carburetor burn fuel look up the fuel consumption on an air-plane in afterburner you will find out everything you need to know on the subject.
