Contrails and they are caused by the heating of the air going through the turbine and being heated which causes the water vapor to turn to steam.

As a matter of interest, they can form at lower altitudes depending on the atmospheric conditions at the time. Usually it takes cold and dry air to allow them to form.

Its actually a vapor trail when the plane hits the afterburner it leaves the vapor burned off the fuel streaming in the air. they can't stay in afterburner long though you think a four-barrel carburetor burn fuel look up the fuel consumption on an air-plane in afterburner you will find out everything you need to know on the subject.
