My best answer for you is to watch this 20-minute video about that very subject.

The reason children learn faster is because their mind is open without any discrimination. They just accept everything and because of that knowledge and wisdom emerge.
As we grow older, we begin to be more and more realistic and practical - realistic and practical in the sense that we begin to have discrimination about what is and isn't, what should and shouldn't, what will and won't etc. And all these discrimination arise from our life experience - we made mistakes, confronted with bad people, etc. And when our discrimination sets in, we start to have a very narrow point of view in everything. We are no longer mentally free like when we were children.
Talents are always there. It's just that we are too engrossed with the menial stuff that we forget them. But if we start to practice where our talent lies, it will be back.
I believe the law of karma and reincarnation explain why some of us are talented when young. They taught that whatever we did and the experiences we achieved in our past lives will be brought forward into this life. Be at peace with yourself and you will get back your talent.

The observation is very highly appreciable !!
You have to become "childlike" (not childish), to regain this ability to learn fast & remember well !
When a person is a child, he has no pre-conceived notions about anything and does not look at things with any prejudice, and has a certain amount of trust in everything seen , told, and presented before it. So, there is just absorption of knowledge without the mind interfering with memory recalled items, judgements etc. The focusing is total. Even as an adult, we unawares slip into that sort of empty/blank state, and anything that we perceive in those few moments stays fresh in our memory, be it a not-needed telephone number, poster, advertisement, face, scene, anything !
There are certain meditations which are useful to re-acquire these abilities, and with practice, we can be better than a child, since the child is having these qualities "unawares" and can lose it soon enough , as we know !!
