Basically it is a secure connections from one place to another like from your house to your work. A business can setup a large vpn to have everyone communicate and send files to each other securely.

You can connect two computers together and share stuff using the Internet but this is not very secure. What you need is a way of conncting computers together that uses encryption (and a few other security tricks involving packets and ports) yet still uses the Internet. This is a VPN. It is used a lot in industry for remote access to data held in the office. Some broadband routers iclude an option for VPN. Buy two of these give one to a mate connect up and off you go

I´ll try to explain it on a non technical way.
Its a secure way to comunicate you with a parthner establishing a tunnel over the internet where you will have a unique key (shared secret or Certificate) that just only you and the gateway you are trying to reach will know in order to grant you access to some resource on a Lan.
This communication is secure becuase uses some encryption algorithms in order to encrypt the information you're to transmit or receive.
