I'm a college student and space is a factor, so the only books I have with me are those I consider totally top-notch. Here's the list:
The Gap Series, by Stephen R. Donaldson: The Real Story, Forbidden Knowledge, A Dark and Hungry God Arises, Chaos and Order, and This Day All Gods Die.
A couple of books from the Sandman series, by Neil Gaiman.
A copy of Watchmen, by Alan Moore. These last two are comic books, but with writing to put most novels to shame.
A few assorted paperbacks, Robert Parker, Piers Anthony, etc. I mostly recommend the others as highly as I can.

I haven't actually measured shelf-feet or anything, but I have all or nearly all books by the following authors: Roger Zelanzy, Dean Koontz, Barbara Hambly (except her historical novels -- don't have all of those yet), Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child...

As for subjects, I have mostly science fiction and fantasy, with a good bit of thrillers and some historical fiction thrown in. I do have several nonfiction books, archaeology and foreign language (I am trying -- without sucess -- to learn Welsh... Long story there) and art history of various sorts. I have some biographies on well-known authors, too. (There are books by Theodore Krulik and Jane Lindskold that I need for that part of my collection...)

I've got so many. The only subjects I don't have are westerns, mystery, and romance. I think science fiction takes up the most space with Isaac Asimov as my favorite author. After him I think it is a tie between Steven King and Dean Koontz.

Wow-I didn't realize how eclectic my reading habits are until you asked this very interesting question! I have Vonnegut, Heller, Faulkner, Poe, Margaret Mitchell, Disraeli, Toole, Berendt, Flagg, Don Marquis, Attenborough, Mueller, Twain, Lawrence, and Hodgson-just to name a few on the shelf that is beside me now!! And that doesn't include the political bios on the second shelf! I don't know if there is just one author or subject that "rules" my space!

Since I'm still young, i dont have a very large library like my grandma, and since she has collected it for me and my sister, and since my sister doesnt liek reading at all, i am allowed to take any book i want from that library, and buying books becomes simply stupid if i can find the one i need at her.

The ones she doesnt have and takes up the most space in my library is undoubtly Sigmund Freud. And all written in english [my native language is lithuanian]. The second author, fiction this time, is Hermann Hesse. Accidentaly bought one of his book and fell in love with him, when i was in germany i had a chance to buy the books i love the most by Hesse in German [I'm sooooo happy i understand german]. The most space taken by the books "stolen" from my grandma is filled with Dostoevsky.

Mercedes Lacky and Anne McCaffrey take up the most room on my shelves. I bought most of their books in hard cover and they're some of the most prolific and talented authors I have ever read. Laurell K. Hamilton (another fabulous author) would be third on the list. She hasn't been writing as long so I expect she will catch up.

I just whipped out my tape and measured 22.5 feet of shelf space and about 8 feet of books in stacks beside the shelves. Yes, I admit I'm a freak. I actually took the time to measure. Out of this 30.5 feet of books, about 6.75 feet are Asian history and literature with Iji Yoshikawa's, "Musashi" being my favorite. Actually, now that I think about it, I have 3 copies of that book (one of my only repeats) and all 3 are loaned out. So add about another 6 inches to my collection.

Side note: One book I highly recommend right now is James Clavelle's historical novel, "Whirlwind" for some good mid-east historical context, cultural insight.

I have a lot of books related to the history of France. Then there are the Harry Potter books, which do take a lot of space.
Then there are my novels (Jane Austen ones are my favorites.)...
Some are by Paulo Coelho... I have sooooo many books, should I list some more?!?!
