try not to back peddle too much. It has a way of leading very quickly to women that this is not at the surface level and is already too deep.
wait til you are comfortable with spending a lil' time maybe ask someone she knows what her name is. but if you just want to hit on her, not knowing who she is may be where you are now. know yourself and she will make it easy and so will you. go ahead and shoot your self in the foot. you only thing you have to fear is that if you don't that alone will come back to haunt u.

"hey whats up?" If she replies halfheartedly or interested, follow up with a question of small talk, something that looks like it would interest her, that way you can establish some sort of conversation. after talking a bit be like: "I'm sorry, I didn't get your name?" (she replies) "its nice to meet you ______, I'm _____" Try to continue the conversation and read her, whether she is turned off or uninterested. if she is interested, try to delve deeper into contact, like if she has to leave "hey, you wanna have lunch sometime?" or if its about that time of day already "you wanna go get something to eat?" continue conversing and getting to know her. get to know what she likes to do and make a mental note. that way you can either learn up on it and it gives you something to talk about in a future conversation. If she starts talking about something or starts bitching about something, don't cut her off, or propose a solution, just listen intently with the occasional nod of head and acknoledgement that you are paying attention. treat her nicely, but don't freak her out. again, you must read what type of girl she is from when you first meet her, whether she is easy or not, and what type of relationship she would make whether it be bf/gf ; friends with benifits, or just a one-time hookup

You may say something like:
"Sorry, I didn't get your name?" Don't say "Hey beautiful..." it may be a total turn off. It is for me at least.
