The answer is no. Janis Joplin recorded new songs that either she, Sam Andrew, or Kris Kristofferson and others wrote. She also re- recorded songs by many African American female blues singers, for example; Tell Mama -recorded by Etta James, Ball and Chain -recorded by Big Mama Thornton, Little Girl Blue- recorded by Nina Simone and of course Summertime from Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess. Janis was responsible for bringing the female blues greats to white American teens in the 60's and 1970. Respectfully, Janis always gave credit to the women who brought us these songs. She didn't "steal" them and record them without discussing their origins. She had huge respect for those who came before her.

I think Janis Joplin wrote her own songs.

For her, or about her? There's a difference. But I can't find evidence that she recorded any of his songs, or that he wrote any for her to sing specifically, nor any about her. Dylan wrote songs about many famous and/or infamous women, however. Tell your friend to prove it to you, please. I'd suggest betting him that he can't. :)

She wrote or co-wrote some of her songs, but not all that many were recorded.

Kris Kristofferson was her ex-lover, and co-wrote Bobby Magee for and about her. They both recorded it.

Leonard Cohen wrote Chelsea Hotel #2 about her, after her death. A cynically wonderful portrait in song, the lyrics are at the bottom of the website listed below. The site is worthwhile, too.

She was great (but I've never gotten over the fact that she used Willie Mae Thornton's exact arrangement of 'Ball and Chain', no matter how well she sang it). I wore a black armband for her for a long time after she died, though.
