warm up...stretch first. Jump rope, short sprints of 10,20 yards.Sprint forward 20 yards, then backpedal to the start. Pushups using a closed fist.(builds up the strength in your wrists)
Squeeze a tennis ball when your reading or watching tv.

At the higher levels of play, tennis players are definitely more fit. That's not to say golfers don't train as hard, but from a purely cardio perspective, tennis players have a substantial edge.

Honestly, tennis is a sport where the best way to get in shape for it is to play. Maybe not competitively, or even keeping score, but going out and hitting balls with a hitting partner is the best way to not only get in shape, but to hone your game as well.

Definitely building up your endurance. You'd be surprised how many people I play with get tired in less than an hour. Other than that, some general light to medium weight training is advised too. Eat healthy, don't get fat and you'll be fine.

running will build stamina and endurance which is needed for tennis on a hot day.

practice your swing like crazy and work on your footwork, staminas important to but mainly just play the game
