That crappy 1970's logo. Their piece-of-shite-cars. Their new 100k-mile "confidence" warranty. Who has confidence in this company? Didn't they just offer employee pricing on their schitty cars this past summer? You wouldn't see Toyota doing that.

Why can't Americans make decent cars? Damned unions!

you don't see Toyota doing that because Toyota isn't run by nasty unions. the unions are killing everything that America stands for. if it wasn't for the unions, GM would still have half a chance. but it's too late.
GM will file for bankrupcy soon because GM pays more money to it's workers for benefits and all that other crap than any employer in America..GM even pays for workers who stopped working at the company years ago!!!

Ok, GM tried hard last year to get people to buy their cars with those "employee discount programs". Guess what? they sold cars, but they LOST MONEY doing it. they lost $1400 per car sold on that dumb program.
Yes, you see, GM can't win because it goes back to the unions who want to suck off GM's strength and kill it.
Furthermore, GM makes lousy cars to boot. Nobody really seriously would consider driving a gas guzzling GM car because they are unreliable and they don't look that great.
GM has done well with only 1 car and that is the C6 Corvette..that car rocks..but they don't sell enough of them to save themselves..

Lastly, think about this. If the Japanese car makers decided to do an "employee discount program" here in America, every US car maker would have DIED yesterday.
9 out of 10 cars sold in America is a JAPANESE car.

the newer Japanese cars are getting close if not already matching the German car makers.

Lexus is a nice car.

The same reason Ford is going through hard times as well. Up until recently, they relied on brand loyalty and 'Buy American' sentiment to sell vehicles (and by vehicles, I mean trucks. Ask any Chevy or Ford truck die-hard, they would stick with their brand even if the interior of the truck were made from dog crap and smelled accordingly). All the while this was going on, other brands (read: Honda and Toyota) went about the business of creating world-class passenger vehicles which offend nobody and perform perfectly. When the gas crunch started hitting the states, Ford and GM were suddenly wondering why when truck and SUV sales started slacking off, people didn't buy their cars, when the simple answer is that the Accord and Camry found a home in driveways across the U.S., whilst Ford and Chevy were cranking out cars suitable only for rental fleets.

*Edit* While yes, the UAW does add to the cost of producing vehicles, this is no excuse for the fact that GM and Ford made bland, uninteresting cars for so long ('halo' cars like the GT and Corvette notwithstanding, I'm talking about cars that provide A-to-B transportation for the nonenthusiast masses).

Your question tries to get responders to agree with a faulty or at least unproved premise. GM is far from being the worst company on earth. In my opinion Exxon/Mobil is far worse.

BTW, have you examined Toyota's labor practices?

Surprisingly, some of the Chevrolets got amazingly high reliability ratings recently.

Sometimes things change: that said, I'd never buy anything but Toyota or Honda: just too good.

Maybe you answered your OWN question; maybe there's something wrong with AMERICANS- that we can't make "decent cars"! Think about it!- You're blaming OTHER countries for making better cars than we are- and WE are buying them- to boot! It's THEIR fault they we don't know what we're doing??! Hey- I can give you an even BETTER example of that; how many of our guys will we send to die in Iraq- before we get the idea that our pressence is half of the problem- and our goals for there- the other half? G.M. has nothing on our government- as it tries to make other countries into OUR image...

Why don't you ask toyota about all the factory recall coverups. I think this guy got hit as a kid by a big old impala, and he still has the chevy emblem imprint on his chest.

There's a reason GM is in the crapper right now, and it's not because they make spectacular cars.
