I have been suffering from migraines and insomnia for aprrox 3 months. My doctor says they are probably related to each other. He has given me serval types of pain pills, and sleeping pills. Which work. But make me sleepy, and sluggish the next day. I work as a registered nurse so I know about the prescription medications. But of course we were never taught about Herbal remedies. Does any one have any that really work. I am having a real hard time with this because I have a demanding job and a family to take care of. And I feel completely worn out. My doctor does have me set up with specialist. But my appointments are not for some time.

Have you tried melatonin for sleep? You can buy it at any vitamin store or drug store. You take it about two hours before bed time. It has no side effects and no "sleep hangover" in the morning. If that doesn't work, there is a new prescription med called Rozerem. It is like a high potency melatonin and I've seen people have pretty good luck. Both Rozerem and melatonin may take a week or so to really know if they are working.

I just started taking magnesium for migraines. So far, so good. I have read numerous studies touting the benefits of magnesium and most suggest 250-500 mg/day.

Hope something works for you.

It depends on what is causing both of these problems. I went through a bout of about a year or more of insomnia. It was caused by menopause and homonal imbalances. I did not want to take HRT or medications. So I delt with it and it was hell. But you can try Melotonin for the insomnia just make sure you are ready for bed within 30-60 minutes of taking it. It is natural and a supplement that the body can be lacking. I used to have the Migraines too when I had PMS. That was hell too. If I did not catch it in time it nothing would help besides sleep, quiet, and darkness. If I could feel it coming on and I took Pain relievers it would help knock it out or I would get a mild version. I found some of the triggers for it: hormone imbalance too much salt not enough water (drinking) not enough sleep certain combinations of foods I used to get them right around that time of the month. If I was careful I could hold them off. Funny how I never got them when I was totally into a healthy diet and when I ate smaller meals. Try different things to find your triggers then avoid them.

There is an herb that they make it in teas called Chamomile Tea (look in your local grocery stores or ask a pharmacist at local drug store). It's one of the safest herb out there. It will help with your insomnia and is less likely to cause any drug interactions if you are on other meds. You should use the unprocessed leaf if that's possible, if not, then teabags are ok too. Use a kettle or pot to boil water with the tealeaf for about 5 minutes and let it shimmer for about 2 minutes with the lid on so that you can get all the ingredients out. Drink this before bedtime, like after dinner. For your migraines, you take magnesium supplement and avoid triggers such as loud noises before bed or even caffeine and chocolate during any part of the day. Hope this helps.
