OK, I think this what you want.
Shoes, you could go to a few shops and look at 3 price ranges of shoes and Brands. Write this down. Then ask the sales person about those shoes Which sales the best and do they have returns more one one than the other.
Then do one more store, that enough I would think.
If, you want a more detailed research check out Jeans or even Bras. Hope this helps.

Why not do this a different way?
make a list of typical ( or even rare) teenage activities.
You could start with:
going to school
playing tennis
swimming
horseback riding
listening to music
dancing at a club
going to the prom
driving a car
list every thing you can like that.
You will see some patterns. Like, some clothing needs to be sturdy, some dressy, some is VERY functional ( like swimsuits.)
===================
after i did that thinking. listing, and grouping, then i would check out stores to see what stores/brands had clothing that fit lots of the groups/functions, and what stores/brands specialize in only one type of clothing/function.
=====================
to me, if you start by seeing what is available in stores you are finding out what people are SELLING to teenagers, what some other people believe teenagers want, but that is not the same thing as "what clothes are suitable for teenagers."
Just my opinion.

it is asking to compare and contrast the clothes that you observe.
You may notice for example. that Be-dazzled jackets are being marketed toward teens the most, along with socks with buttons on them or something to that effect. You have to look at trends and patterns of different stores of clothes. Ex. Abercrombie has Cargo pants in all Teenage kids sizes. So does American Eagle, so does Walmart and J.C. Penney. Obviously Cargo pants are popular among teens. The retail market is huge on Supply and Demand. If the consumer demands it, the stores will Supply it.
It shouldn't be that hard of a project to do, at least you'll get to shop.

Perhaps it would be interesting to do two different sets of interviews, do one set with the teenagers and find out what kind of clothes they wear and interested in buying, and then interview some parents of teenagers and find out what kind of clothing they are willing to buy for their teenagers and what they feel is most suitable. You could also flip through teen magazin and cosmo girl and take notes on what kind of clothes the models are wearing, and maybe check out some online websites of popular stores and see whats hot in the juniors sections.

maybe you could relate the clothing sold to different stereotypical social groups. that way, you could market different clothes to different social groups. for example, "popular" kids typically come from higher income families, so they have the money to spend at stores like gap and the buckle. "goth" kids might spend more time shopping for clothes at hot topic, or something. relate the clothes marketing to something that you're familiar with. that's how i would go about it. but ask the teacher first if they will clarify what they want done in the research.

People in todays society will buy whatever you want to sell. But media determines what is in vogue. So the questions need to be asked of a cross section of social groups, men,women,athletic,indoor,outdoor, dry,wet, is lotsa factors in that.
Best to do a Survey of Teenagers in your local area to get a feel for what trends that group is following. See what is hot in Florida might allready be cold in California, so area survey is best to determine what is ideal for sales in a particular area.
As far as suitable for teenagers, well that is a can or worms that not many know. Suitable is a relative statement, what may be suitable for one tribe may be offensive to another.
