I have forgotten what the source for my answer is. Sorry to say. But I remember a conversation just last year for a Doctor of English Literature who told me where she had read that the use of multiple X's as short for kisses, stems from the sign we call an "asterisk."

The asterisk in combination with an exclamation point was often used to signify a "smack on the lips" type kiss.
It was shortend to x's simply as "shorthand" because it was often used in small writing spaces like parts of an envelope, the bottom of an already full page of a letter, a greeting card, etc.

WHAT A BUNCH OF RUMPKINS!!!
xxx does not mean sex, they have just been in the porn rooms too long cuz they can't get a woman!
I have no clue, actually, but I never seen a guy use xxx for kisses. OMG! That is because they are in the PORN ROOM!!! ALONE! With only their own two hands holding their BRAIN!
