Because you're talking to the wrong people. Talk to intellectuals who can differentiate between SUBJECTIVE and OBJECTIVE responses, attitudes and sources. If you ask the general public about things like 9/11 then you're gonna get the GENERAL PUBLIC's opinion, which shouldn't really be counted. If you ask smart people about such controversial topics you might get yourself into an interesting conversation about politics and philosophy - which, it looks like, is what you're looking for.

people are typically defensive about things that they are tied to with strong emotions
what kind of question can a person ask about 9/11 that isn't charged with emotional context?
if someone asked me:
do you consider 9/11 a victory?
before I heard the opinion of the asker, I would already be defensive
the question itself is antagonistic in such an emotionally charged situation
it is like if I ask you "do you think your mother is a stupid whore?"
you would not have to wait for my opinion before your emotions on the subject would kick in and bring you to the defensive
even a less aggressive 9/11 question than the one I proposed still rubs at an emotion and hints at a position, for instance
"do you think George Bush and his cronies planned and instigated the attack?"
this is like the mother question, it will, and should put anyone on the defensive
I can think of some questions about the 9/11 attack that wouldn't be as provocative as these, but I have a hard time thinking of any real question that would be emotionally neutral, even just the asking

It's a natural reaction for some because so many opinions have been shoved down our throats, mainly by politicians.
