My experience is sometimes people look for people to abuse or take their problems out on. I use to have a woman come in to the pharmacy I cashiered at who loved to make people miserable and get them for anything then threaten to get them fired. I just began closing my cash register then standing near the other cashier when she went through because she never did it when there were witnesses because my boss said she was on psychiatric medicine. Stay calm, do not get upset, call a back up, be prepared for it in advance with your team workers which is what you all should be, and recognize it may be something else in the persons life. One woman who made my life miserable at work a coworker was being beaten by her husband at home I learned later on. When my sister told me about the cook at her waitress job making her miserable I told her about my experience. She spoke with her and they became friends as my sister learned she was being beaten by her boyfriend. I am sure she encouraged her to leave the relationship. People have problems, physical problems, mental problems, and even dishonesty problems many people want a free meal and cause problems to get it, some people want a free room or discount so they make up stuff to get it. Just do not do anything to encourage them to come back if they are just trying to basically steal from your company. Give them a refund or give them a slight discount but I prefer the refund and to get the item back so they do not get off on ripping off the system more. Be nice be proper. Remember the person there who is angry may not be too evenly keeled and may be a danger to you so be sure you are not alone and be ready to duck for cover. Remember a harsh word stirs up anger and a soft word turns away wrath. I always try to remember people who have been shot all over from people suffering from rage for whatever reason and say as little as possible because angry people are not rational.

the most important thing is to let them talk, vent out their anger...when all is out they will usually cool down. Only then do u step in...sympathise with thier problems (if u cant...pretend the best u can)...apologise if its really ur or the company's fault and give them appropriate suggestions/compensation.
