The Ipod is the best out there, and your friend might have been talking about the fact that you can't delete songs off the ipod without connecting it to the computer (but really what mp3 player can do that)

More functions in a smaller body? No wonder it was elected the best 2006-2007 5th generation ipod by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA), in the personal MP3 player category. The new iPod now includes advanced video options. Now offering all the functions demanded by the millions of iPod fans throughout the world the Apple iPod is the most complete and thrilling MP3 player on the market today. in terms of music, the 30 Gb iPod will hold up to 7,500 songs with colour album sleeves. In terms of video files, the iPod is compatible with MPEG-4 and H.264 formats to play on the 2.5" colour screen. You can watch up to 75 hours of video on your iPod. On your iPod you can watch your personal videos, podcast videos and downloadable video clips available from iTunes Music Store (service only available in certain countries) and don't forget your photos! The iPod will hold up to 12,500 of your personal photos. Your iPod's battery life will see you through up to 20 hours of music or 2 hours of video playback. The bigger screen now offers a crisper cleaner picture. All this and the iPod is even thinner, the 30 Gb iPod now takes up 45% less space than the first iPod. The iPod's trademark control pad makes it easy to navigate through your files with a single hand and the compact size will allow you to carry all your music, video files and photos with you. The iPod consumers can also watch their video files and slideshow from a TV by purchasing the additional Apple accessories.

Yes you can. Whoever told you that doesn't know what they are talking about. I add and delete songs to my ipod all the time. I even add and delete audiobooks.
