I second the vote for REI, either in Paradise Valley or Tempe. They have a lot of event info and also a bulletin board. You might be able to start a hiking club or find an existing one.

Also, going hiking and being friendly might do the same thing. We like Dreamy Draw Park. We are low-grade hikers (stroller on the pavement or short walks into the trails with the kids) but my friend who trail runs there has made friends who go a lot and the got to know each other.

I like to try to hike from time to time and I think your best bet is to get on the trail and meet the folks face to face and ask them. You will soon find that most people who hike in Arizona hike on the trails and don't have time or desire to hike on the Internet. And on that note, I AM OUT OF HERE!!!!
