It's a pretty tough job and the requirements vary. I worked for American Express for a while. They are a really good company to work for, but they required the SEC Series 7 exam. How tough is that? I studied 12 hours a day, 6 days a week for several months in order to sit for the test.
Look in your telephone book for Financial Planners in your area and go talk to them. DO NOT ask them for a job, but tell them you are interested in the field and would like more info. If they are good at what they do, they should be willing to spend a few minutes discussing the field with you.
Also, try American Express Financial Planners. I really do recommend the company, and they take great care of their employees. Oops! I just googled AmEx and found that they are involved in a lot of legal actions agains them. Hmmm. So try the next link as well.

The American College offers a series of courses for those interested in pursuing a career in financial planning.

Those interested in becoming financial analysts require greater educational requirements.

You do not need to become a financial analyst first.

Since there is not any universal definition of "financial planner", it helps if the terms are defined. The term "financial planner" can encompass both a range of duties and customers/clients. Some sell insurance or investments. Some don't. Some manage acccounts.

What types of activities are you most interested in performing?
