Here is the deal. Im in a gay relationship (this is important cause we cant get married). I work at an insurance company, I have been working there for several years. Its kind of an odd pairing. I work in the mailroom and I hit it off with an exec and we started dating. Over the past year and a half, it has gotten more serious. We have kept our respective jobs, and have moved in together. Everything is going great except for one small problem. He wants me to quit my job and keep the house running! We do have a big house we have to hire a few cleaners to do the cleaning, because neither of us has time to do much. When we do have time, we want to spend it together and not cleaning. I do quite a bit of cooking and keep the laundry up. Im just not cut out for the "stay at home and clean" routine, im a guy, and I like to work. Its not a HUGE issue, we are not fighting over it, I have tried telling him I want to keep working, but he keeps insisting.

Help!

Maybe that's his way of telling you that there can be possible issues, hopefully not in the relationship, if you two keep working in the same company. Maybe he also wants for you to have more time for him as your current job is taking so much of your attention and time than he, at times, feels neglected even if you do live together. Managing a home alone takes a lot of effort and maybe he'd like you to exert less at work and more at home so he'd feel more of your presence when he gets there after office.
If he's in a higher position, you will just have to let him keep his job and try to find another, another job which he will approve of and which you won't need to work as hard as he seems to be able to support you. Just make sure you'd still be able to earn as much in case things go wrong (but let's hope it won't). Discuss this with him and try to work something you can compromise about.

Here's what you could do:

Start a little business. You say you cook, correct? Start your own cooking business. Just put an ad on Craigslist as a personal chef and, first of all, you won't get many clients, but it will keep you busy.

Or you can write a recipe book and use Lulu.com to publish it and advertise it wherever you can.

Or you could give massages for people right from your home, or take a small course on how to do something useful from home (physical training and start coaching, dietary advise and give consultations, computer design and teach people to make websites, or simply art and teach children how to color and make paintings). This can all be done from home, it brings you income, it keeps you busy, and takes your mind off of not working.

Okay, what happens if things don't work out, you're out of a good job. Assuming you like where you work. I do know how you feel though, I have 4 kids and stay home with them while my husband works 12 hour days 6-7 days a week. It involves a lot of give and take. A strong relationship will survive and it sounds like things should work themselves out.
