Yes. My background is research in cybernetics, cognitive sciences, and computer tech. My group has used the "auto-epistemolgical" approach to the creation of "machine intellect" fashioned after the mapping of the "Collectiive Human Intellect" - we refer to this as the CHI Factorization. For me, there is absolutlely no doubt that the potential exists and may even be inevitable. As far as "taking over the world" that depends upon who is creating the sentience... we can allow for a conscience, a sense of loyalty, humor, etc.... IT all DEPENDS on US, collectively speaking.

I wouldn't be surprised. I went to the supermarket today and the cashier had to count out. Not count out manually but they had this device that weighed the loose change and counted the bills. What happened to the old way?? I couldn't believe it...what is this world becoming??

no.... because there is a limit to how rich the world to become, the way the global economy is heading with oil prices and availability etc, i predict the common person will be less likely to have a computer (especially in developing, undeveloped countries)
