i rather liked both, so it would really depend on which games, to decide which system.
---------
for RPGs, you need to go with snes.
sega had phantasy star II, III, and the awesome IV, and it also had shining forces... but sega rpgs were limited in number.
snes had final fantasy II, III. it had Lufia I and II, it had illusion of gaia, secret of mana, secret of evermore. it had zelda-link to the past. super mario rpg. earthbound.
--------
for action/side scrollers, go with sega. sonic, streets of rage, earthworm jim (was better on sega)
--------
for fighting games, also sega - more buttons! medium punch/kick!

Good question. I have an emulator on my computer and tons of roms, so it's not really back in the day for me. But I thought Genesis had a lot more really good games, but SNES won me over with its smaller number of fantastic games. Now it seems the Genesis has more pick up and play type games and the SNES has more of the really epic long-term commitment games.

I owned a Genesis but the SNES supposedly had a slight edge in performance. I was pleased overall with the Genesis.

I had a Genesis, so I was a Sega guy. My neighbor had an SNES, so there was a rivalry going on there.

Gotta go with SNES. Side-scrolling Super Mario was much better than Sonic. I also had duck hunt which was awesome.
Oh yeah and the original Legend of Zelda. Legendary.

I still own a Sega Genesis and play it from time to time, but I'll take Nintendo over it any day. Besides, Sega doesn't make platforms anymore, so you tell me who was better.
