With running backs you gotta look at two key factors what they could do...On this one Barry wins hands down he was better catching passes, could turn a short run up the gut into a 90 yard td and was better at picking up the blitz.
Second you have to look at the talent around them. Emmit always had at least one lineman in the prowbowl and with Aikmen and Irvin he had a passing game that kept Defenses from focusing in on hime and stacking 8 in the box, Barry never had that luxury.
Comparing Sanders and Smith is like comparing a Porsche a Pinto..it isn't even close, Sanders by a mile.

You know, back in the 90s Thurman Thomas was added to this debate, too. Sorry... Buffalo fan.
I think knowing everything about their careers, now, I would draft Barry Sanders ahead of Emmitt Smith. Emmit has all the accolades, but Barry has all the raw talent. Year in and year out, you see outstanding collegiate athletes get passed up in the draft for players with the raw talent. For example, some Heisman trophy winners don't get drafted, or have very unsuccessful NFL careers, compared to their collegiate ones.
Emmit had way too many other weapons surrounding him to take the pressure off, and their o-line was world-class.
The only guys I can remember from Barry's team were Herman Moore and Rodney Peete.
Barry pound-for-pound, figuratively speaking, was a better back.

Give me Sanders any day. Smith did what he did behind a good team with many weapons. If Sanders had been behind the Cowboys line, he would have been the rushing king years before Smith finally did it. I'm not discounting what Emmitt did, but look at what happened whe he went to Arizona. Not much.

Well, we can say that Barry might be the goat (greatest of all time) but that would only be speculation, since he just walked away from the game. So Emmitt is the goat for sure with no doubts.

Emmitt Smith in my book is the #1 all time running back. He did it with great style and was always thankful to God for his talent.

barry's weakness is that he couldnt get the one yard on 3 and 1 but if you need 80 yards, he's the man
