Hugo Chavez is a good and decent man. He won his election fairly, unlike the present US president. He is being smeared because he does not kiss either bush's, or America's asz. He is standing up for his country and his people, thats why he is popular there and hated here. At least by people who don't know whats going on politically.

I enjoyed your question so much...I started to google "Chavez" and find the recent history about Venezuela very interesting....you lit a fire in my mind and I'm enjoying the education....from what I've learned so far. He was an army officer and when elected as leader he started out ridding his country of poverty that is the biggest problem. The elite rich and upper middle class Venezuelans are not that satisfied with Chavez. Also I read that a spiritual man a yogi from a spiritual group has inspired Chavez to use their beliefs to change the country. If it works it might change the country but if they go in an extreme direction I'm afraid no one will be served. I must read more to find out why Chavez hates us so much here in USA....

With the U.S. now the world's lone superpower, the dichotomy between Easy/West and Capitalist/Communist is no longer available for nations to define their place in the world order. As in the days of fading Empires during the early 20th century, when the Old Order begins to fade, disparate nations, groups, ethnicities that were once bound by politics try to assert their individuality.
Nations that were once considered secondary in the "old order" of the Cold War are now trying to rise in prominence. Some, like China and India are trying to do so economically. Others, like the former Hussein regime in Iraq, and the current regimes in Iran, North Korea and Venezuela are try do so politically by aligning themselves against the United States.
As the lone superpower, the United States is an easy target. Our cultural influence has spread around the world and most of the world thinks they have a good idea of what "America" means. Meanwhile, people have generally little actual insight into the minds of these "upstart" leaders, so they are able to assign to them their own values. Call it the "Che Guevara" syndrome. Young men around the world decry American violence while proudly wearing Che's image on their swollen chests, apparently unaware, or uncaring, that he was guilty of most of the acts for which they condemn the Americans.
In short, human nature tends to support the "underdog." Most of us, given the choice, would want to see the small, over-achieving team beat the perrenial champions in any sport. The same feelings are true in politics. Shrewd leaders like Mr. Chavez know this. Had he supported the U.S. people would be calling him "lackey" and "Bush's Butler" as they do Tony Blair. By defying the U.S. he is writing his own folk legend with himself as the hero.

Hugo Chavez went on the nightly news program "Nightline" while Ted Kopel was still the host. He said he had evidence that the CIA had interfered with his country's elections. He also said he had documented evidence that the U.S. Navy had been conducting exercises in case the U.S. decided to invade his country.
If you would like to read a transcript of the interview, see this webpage: http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/International/story?id=1134098&page=2
I don't know about the accuracy of the information that Chavez has, but he certainly seemed to believe it.
If it were me and I believed another nation had done those things, I would go out of my way to make situations difficult for them.

For starters,it's because of the pea-brained idiot running this country, George W. Bush and his politics in general. He also thinks that since we're in sort of an energy crisis, that we'll go after his oil and use it. Personally, I kind of like Chavez, at least he can pull off knowing what he's talking about a whole lot better.

It's not Venezuela. It's Hugo Chavez. He has found a great way to maintain his power and his celebrity on the world stage, by creating turmoil between himself and the US.
I think we should tell him, "Sir you are no Fidel Castro..."
