There should be a 'cancel' button on the screen when scandisk starts running.
Are you sure that the computer completely freezes? Sometimes, scandisk will seem to get stuck on a certain number during scanning, but it's still working. You just have to be patient.

Skipping over scandisk's scanning is a bad idea though. Scandisk will run at boot time if your computer crashed or if you did not turn off your computer properly. In those cases, some files may have not been written properly to the hard drive. Messed up files can make things worse, if not fixed immediately. Broken file chains and other disk problems could make other files messed up. It's like a virus; The problem just keeps growing.

You can't run defrag till after you get scandisk to run. Try booting up with F8. Then try command prompt only. Then run "checkdisk" and see what info it gives. Then run scandisk in dos mode, windows scandisk can't work if there is a driver boot problem that the dos ver. may be able to fix.

Hit any key or cancel button before the scandisk starts.
