I don't leave my door unlocked during the day. I live in a small town in Southern Illinois. Before I moved here from the Chicago area, I use to visit my family here, every summer and holidays. I can remember sleeping in the living room with only an unlocked screen door between me and the night. We never worried then (the 60's). But times have changed. No one with any sense would leave the their doors unlocked now.

I live in the middle class suburbs and we lock our doors every night. We also make sure our car doors are unlocked. It is not really safe anywhere anymore with the people selling and using drugs. If they want money for drugs your door may be the one they might choose to walk in and steal from you because they know that it is an easy steal. They will sell your items to buy more drugs with. If they break in during the day it is usually just to steal, but if they break in at night they are more likely coming in to attack someone and steal from them. Keep a telephone sitting on a table next to your bed to dial 911 if you hear any frightening noises that sounds as if someone is walking in or breaking in. Better safe than sorry. I remember when I was young and at home with my parents that we never worried about locking the doors. Times have changed and teens seem to be trying things at a younger age than they used to.

You know, the number of people who say they don't lock their doors is staggering to me. It only takes one tragedy to come to the realization that the simple act of locking that door might have prevented a terrible event.

I know it's not a guarantee of safety but for heaven's sake, why make it easy for anyone to get into your house? Especially those of you with children. You can't pick up a paper or turn on a news show without hearing that another child has been abducted or someone has been brutally murdered and there were no signs of forced entry.

All the apologies in the world won't bring a murder victim back.

Please, people. Start locking your doors.

I have left the door unlocked lots of times. Occasionally have left the garage door up. So far, no problems, they have police compiled data on a website by zipcode. There has been one car theft reported in the last three years, no other propery or personal crime reported. It is nice to live in a safe neighborhood. I picked the house because I liked it, I guess the neighborhood was just a bonus.

I have gotten better about the doors being locked. My elderly mom visits and insists on it being locked up tight, has made me more aware of how frequently we were leaving it unlocked.

I lock, always -- and more. There can't actually be any place left where people leave their doors unlocked anymore. I'm not in the city but not in the country either. Nobody's totally safe -- anywhere.

We moved from Austin back to our home town a few months ago, and when we first moved back, I was so obssesive about locking the doors... checking them...rechecking them, that it took me a while to wake up to the fact that we now live 20 miles outside of a city of 120,000 with three acres, a huge Basset Hound and an agressive donkey between us and a dirt road, so I've been letting the habit slip.

I always lock my doors at night and when I leave at any point during the day. I live in a college town. I guess it's the size of a city.

My mom does still. If I stay there at night tho I lock ALL of the doors, including the sliding ones on the deck. But most of the times her door is unlocked. My aunts also keep theirs unlocked. All of them live in a suburbian type area.

We don't leave our door unlocked. We live in Baltimore city. That would be begging for trouble.
